Call for Expressions of Interest: Board of Directors 

Overview:

Comm Unity Plus Services Limited (commUnity+) is looking to appoint up to three new Directors to the Board of Directors to contribute to our strategy and vision. 

There are currently eight Directors serving on the Board of commUnity+. There may be a maximum of 11 Directors. 

The Board meets six-eight times per year. Directors may also join a Committee of the Board. 

All roles are voluntary, however reasonable costs to support Board participation will be met by the organisation. The organisation is committed to supporting Directors by contributing to governance training and professional development as a Director. 

ABOUT COMMUNITY+ 

commUnity+ is a longstanding provider of community services based in the Greater Western and Northern Metropolitan areas of Melbourne. We strive to create positive change, growth, and enablement through a range of prevention and early intervention programs targeted to support people and communities experiencing disadvantage. Our programs include Community Education, Children’s Contact Services, Neighbourhood House and Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre, as well as community engagement and development activities.  

commUnity+ celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022 and has a significant presence within the West. 

We have a highly capable leadership team that work to realise the Board’s vision to make a positive impact for people living in Melbourne’s west where “Everyone in the West has a safe place where they feel they belong and live the life they choose”.  

commUnity+ is a company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. commUnity+ is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). commUnity+ receives funding from local, state and Commonwealth government departments. 

commUnity+ is governed by a Board and three Board Committees: 

  • Finance and Risk Management Committee 
  • Governance Committee 
  • Community Advisory Committee.

  • New business ventures and marketing 
  • ICT and Cybersecurity. 

We are interested in people who may have strong connections to the people and communities we serve.  

The ideal candidates will also be able to demonstrate a commitment to our values, have a good understanding of the challenges that face the community sector and ideally bring experience working with community-focused or for-purpose organisations in leadership roles.

Reasonable costs to support committee participation will be met by the organisation. We are committed to removing any barriers to applying or joining the committee. 

As we are a company limited by guarantee, our Directors must meet all statutory obligations of company directors. The Board delegates management responsibilities to the Chief Executive Officer in accordance with the limits and guidance of the organisation’s policies, the Board and Committees of the Board. 

commUnity+ is a child safe organisation. Prior to commencing, prospective Directors will need to undergo a national Criminal Records Check and hold a current Working with Children Check. These Checks will need to be maintained.

Expressions of interest for nomination as a Director closes at 11:59pm on 17 March 2024. The screening and interview process will occur during March 2024, after which nominations for appointments to fill casual vacancies will be confirmed.

About Our Programs

commUnity+ offers a wide range of programs that have great volunteer opportunities. If you’re interested in community legal,  Neighbourhood House activities or need a student placement in social work, then commUnity+ might be the right place for you!  

Community Legal:

The Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre (BMCLC) offers volunteer opportunities where individuals are able to learn and develop administrative-legal skills. These responsibilities include the process of client intakes, composing documentation for our staff members regarding clients and all other parties and many other fundamental tasks that help increase the productivity of our legal centre.

Neighbourhood House Activities:

Neighbourhood House is in need of some friendly and efficient adult volunteers to help assist us with our programs. With your help and support, we can run our activities with ease and give our community more opportunities.

Student Placements - Social Work:

The Children’s Contact Service Centre, allows social work students to have their University placements at our centres. During the placements, students will be given the opportunity to enhance their administration skills and learn about how our contact centre conducts changeovers and supervised visits. Students will also have the chance to work with families with diverse, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds who require varying levels of support.
