Community Lawyer

Community Lawyer

  • Opportunity to work autonomously in developing a new project
  • Youth Focus
  • Part time (0.4), 12 month contract
  • Attractive employee benefits including salary packaging, flexible work options available

The organisation

commUnity+ is a multi-disciplinary organisation that provides education, legal and family services across Victoria.  Through our legal program (delivered by Brimbank-Melton Community Legal Centre) we offer a range of legal services to disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the Brimbank and Melton communities.

The role

A dynamic community lawyer with experience working with young people will work with our lawyers and partners to develop and coordinate legal education workshops designed to empower young people and address their common legal needs in innovative and fun ways.

As well as providing community legal education, the community lawyer will undertake individual advice sessions and identify suitable referral paths for youth clients.

This role will largely work off-site at partner locations across the Brimbank and Melton area, but will be nominally based at our St Albans office.

Skills required

This is not a traditional casework lawyer role. We are looking for an engaging communicator with experience and passion working with youth in an education and information context. In addition you will have practiced across areas of the law such as fines/infringements, civil law and debt, tenancy, criminal law and family violence.

You will need to have high level research and project management skills developing and presenting community legal education projects/programs which target specific community groups. Understanding and experience of community development principles or youth work practice will also be an advantage.

The role needs someone who enjoys working autonomously in developing and delivering a project but who also knows how to remain connected and engaged with the legal team and the broader organisation.

Essential

  • Eligibility for admission as a barrister/solicitor in Victoria
  • A current Working with Children’s Check

Desirable

  • Vietnamese or other additional language
  • The role will require travel to other sites of BMCLC and Comm Unity Plus so a drivers license and access to a vehicle is desirable
